On Tuesday, April 25, KLRN hosted a special community screening of “The One That Got Away” followed by a local five-minute segment featuring the Wheatley Community School at The Little Carver Civic Center,
KLRN was one of five recipients of a grant provided by WNET as part of the Chasing the Dream initiative.
Eighty people joined KLRN for the event, which offered us an opportunity to highlight programs and share how education is at the core of our mission.
Brian Dillard, President of the Dignowitty Hill Neighborhood Association, was our emcee. The activities for the evening included the screening plus a presentation by nine partnering agencies working in San Antonio’s East Side to help improve educational outcomes.
Presenting agencies included: Wheatley Community School, Urban Strategies, UTSA Roadrunner Readers, Sutton Oaks Academy, Wheatley Community School Leadership Council, Gardopia Gardens, Education Opportunity Center, San Antonio for Growth on the East Side and City Year.
Speakers gave personal accounts about youth who have made impressions on them, and told how some students shared stories similar to Tourrie Moses', the young man featured in “The One That Got Away.” Chris Caesar, who presented on behalf of City Year, is a member of KLRN’s Community Advisory Board.
Tune in to KLRN at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27, to see “The One That Got Away” and the local segment featuring the Wheatley Community School.
