Over 275 local children gathered at the Hemisfair Park to participate in the Monarchs, milkweed and Migration Event on March 3.
A simulated migration helped families understand the monarch’s journey from Canada through the United States, and down to the Oyamel Fir forest in Mexico where the butterfly lives during the winter. Families also learned about the relationship between monarch butterflies and the milkweed plant.
BASF and the University of Texas at San Antonio hosted the event with the goal of raising awareness regarding the monarch butterfly population decline.
Faculty members and students at UTSA continue working to restore the monarch butterfly population through research on Milkweed in Texas.
