KLRN Virtual Classroom - Thermal Energy

Email share

Extend the learning (and fun!) with these resources about THERMAL ENERGY… and more from PBS LearningMedia!

And, be sure to join us on February 10 @ 11am & 3:30pm CST for our next KLRN Virtual Classroom. We'll watch the Curious Crew take on DENSITY!

See our full schedule and how to register here.

Grades K-2
Energy Vampires
An "energy vampire" is an electronic device that drinks power even when it is not being used. Like computers in standby mode or chargers that are done charging. Spooky, huh? Take a look at this slideshow, from The Greens, and slay the energy vampires in your house! The Greens is a website for kids from WGBH about sustainability and green living.

Grades 3-5
Thermal Energy Transfer
Explore the three methods of thermal energy transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation, in this interactive from WGBH, through animations and real-life examples in Earth and space science, physical science, life science, and technology.

Cooking Cookies with Solar Power
The ZOOM cast tests two homemade solar cookers to determine which one can cook a "s'more" faster. Both designs exploit the fact that heat flows in three ways: by conduction, convection, and radiation. Though one cooker performs better than the other, they both outperform the experiment's control setup.

Grades 6-8
Geothermal Heats Up
Solar and wind power may get the headlines when it comes to renewable energy. But another type of clean power is heating up in the hills just north of Sonoma wine country. Geothermal power uses heat from deep inside the Earth to generate electricity. Includes an Educator Guide

SciGirls | Light Bulb Challenge
This activity, presented by SciGirls, teaches students how to test the performance and efficiency of light bulbs. They must calculate and compare the efficiency of fluorescent versus incandescent light bulbs.

Grades 9-12
Measuring Bond Energy of an Ionic Compound
In this media-rich lesson, students investigate bond energy and the law of conservation of energy. They examine the chemistry behind instant cold packs by using a calorimeter to study the endothermic dissociation of ammonium chloride in water.
